The idea of the self-published book used to be far out of the reach of many people. There were just too many costs and problems involved in the process. So, many people were forced to shelve their novel ideas and give up their dreams of being published authors. What were those problems? Well, if an author wanted to distribute a self-published book, he or she would have a lot of upfront costs. In order to make the per-book costs reasonable, authors often had to pay for hundreds or thousands of books to be printed at once. Typically, that meant that many people had to go deep into debt to self-publish or give up their self-publishing dreams entirely. Then, there was finding a publishing house. Self-published boooks were few and far between because it was too expensive. Yet, for many authors, finding a big publishing house to take them on was a nightmare, too. Submitting manuscripts to publishing houses and getting dozens of rejection letters was enough to make many potential authors give up entirely. Since many people meant with so many problems, there were not nearly as many books out there as there are now. That all changed in recent years, though. Technological advancements have caused a new interest in the self-published book. With the digital age and the popularity of the Internet, it suddenly made self-publication of books much more feasable. Now, people can easily take their creative masterpieces and advertise and distribute them online. That eliminates the need to pay so many up front costs. In fact, in some cases, authors don't have to pay upfront at all. It's all thanks to POD, or Print On Demand, technology. POD means that books can be printed in small batches, or even one at a time, as they're ordered. The costs of digital printing are so low that there's no longer a need to buy book printings in bulk. So, authors can advertise their works online and get a commission when each copy is sold, which is before the copy is even printed. That cuts out all of the up front costs to the author. Of course, the self-published book concept isn't all about novels either. Many people choose to preserve family history with self-published books or even make their own high-quality photo albums. With all of the advances in technology, the self-publication possibilities are practically endless. So, the market is constantly growing with more and more publications on almost every subject you can imagine. Article Source: http://www.ArticleBlast.com |
