Graduation speeches are more than mere words. They should be inspirational and they ought to give graduates a memory to cherish and a message to remember. Graduation speeches should mark the day as being a special occasion. A graduation is about achievement. It is about the ending of one phase in life and the beginning of another. It is a day when parents should be thanked and tutors appreciated. It's a day when students are addressed and valedictorians reminisce. Every college has its own traditions, of course, but overall the day is one of celebration. It is a day for visiting dignatories and flags flying. It is a day when hard work is rewarded and students go out on the town. That is, naturally, when the official ceremony is over. Whether you call it commencement or graduation the message is the same. It says "Congratulations and well done". Graduates come from all sorts of disciplines. They may qualify as teachers or graduate in women's studies. You can graduate from High School or even elementary school. Graduates may choose to leave college and go to work or to continue with further studies. For many university graduates the day marks the time when they make decisions about travelling and seeing some of the world before they start work. It is also a day for saying goodbye to close friends and promising to keep in touch. It is a time to look forward to what the world may bring. Above all it is a day for satisfaction. In a tough economic climate being a graduate is not always the answer when you are seeking a job. Nonetheless it gives you the advantage over someone who has not got a degree. It shows that you were willing to work, to study a subject and to meet deadlines. It proves and that you had an interest in specific subjects. Graduating gives you the edge. It also gives you a good basis for changing your mind and changing directions if you so choose. Graduation is about gowns and caps and photos on the wall. It is about proud parents and beaming students. Graduation day brings a feeling of completion and a touch of excitement. It also, of course, brings a touch of apprehension. There can be few graduates who do not wonder what the future will hold. All they can hope is that having graduated will mean that that future will be brighter and more successful.
