shush.jpgDear Romance,

By the time you read this, most of us will have escaped your overbearing tendencies.

Not many decades ago, women often complained that men were not sensitive and considerate enough about their feelings. Words were tossed about with fierce emotions and demands of more compassion. The women's rights movement motivated women out of the kitchen and to free our entrapped breasts. Today, women are liberated and some choose the kitchen or the office and others choose both. Many choose to entrap their breasts in nifty cleavage enhancing push up bras and those that lack the goods can slide into a water bra and create the illusion. We have come a long way and so have our razors but during all of these transformations what has happened to our men?

Hand holding, cuddling and gazing into one's eyes, has been portrayed as a "girlie" action in the last century. On older television shows such as "Married with Children," men often complained about having to sleep with their wives and cuddling was thought to be dreadful. The wave of reality shows that are on television have not prepared me for the new generation of men: the sensitive ones (who incidentally, may also be the same jerks using those idiotic pickup lines). The ones who want to take you out to dinner, hold your hand and gaze into your eyes when all you really want to do is eat your food.Have we finally gotten the sensitive male our predecessors fought for or are farmers pumping too much estrogen into cows?

The new generation of sensitive men want more than just hand holding, they want relationships and want to make closet space for themselves in your house. They have become so considerate of your needs that they will do taboo things like cunnilingus during that time of the month. All this icky sticky sugar coated romance is too much for some of us. Not all women need to have their eyes gazed in, their hands held or receive flowers constantly. Too much romance and attention can become irritating, even smothering.

Some of my female friends tell me how much they hate it when their boyfriends stare or do other annoying things. Rosie K. from New York feels the same way about her boyfriend: "All he has to do is look good and fuck me. I actually rather not have him talk he's a dick when he talks."al_bundy.jpg

Jon from Queens, New York is a man who likes to admire his women, "It's like staring at a piece of art.". Despite the claim that it is out of admiration, quite a few females can testify that it is annoying. "I like him quiet or telling me what to do in bed and that's about it" stated Rosie. We do not want to be stared at while eating, watching television or during sex. Sure eye contact is nice, but you are not Dracula and you will not put us in a trance. There is a time and place for gazing into each other's eyes, like Tantric Sex or staring contests.

Not everyone is a hand holder or likes to be cuddled, some people prefer not to be touched and find public displays of affection to be repulsive. Unfortunately, people never really pair up with those who have mutual rules about affection and then there is always that one person you meet who will break down all your barriers. That one person who's hand you want to hold and give little kisses to at the bar and hold tight after hot sweaty sex. Every word that comes out of his or her mouth turns you on no matter how inane.

The best way to resolve the staring and touching issues is to stop when asked or remember your manners and refrain from doing it. If you are aware that you do not have an affectionate partner who likes closeness then respect his or her desire to roll over to the other side of the bed. If this is an issue you cannot get past with your partner perhaps it is time to find someone who will partake in and enjoy all your romantic endeavors. Someday someone will come into your life and tear down your barriers or turn you into the cold counterpart you attempted to break down.

In the meanwhile, please stop staring.

Sincerely,

A. Annoyed Woman
