Implanon: Sub-dermal birth control

Implanon (etonogestrel implant) is a type of birth control that is used for preventing pregnancy in women. It is a single-rod sub dermal implant that continually releases a low, steady dose of etonorgestrel, effectively preventing pregnancy for a period of up to three years. It consists of a non-biodegradable rod measuring 40mm in length and 2mm in diameter. The rod is more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.

After administering a local anesthestic, your doctor inserts Implanon under the skin of the upper arm. The procedure takes no more than two minutes. If you feel good, you can go home immediately afterwards. There may be a little bruising at the site of injection.

Important Safety Information about Implanon

  • It does not protect against HIV (AIDS) or other sexually transmitted diseases.
  • It must be removed by the end of the third year and may be replaced by a new rod at the time of removal.
  • Failure to remove Implanon may result in infertility, ectopic pregnancy, or inability to stop a drug-related adverse event.
  • Avoid smoking.

How does Implanon work?

Implanon steadily releases the hormone etonorgestrel into your bloodstream, the hormone reaches your ovaries, and prevents them from releasing eggs. It also changes the mucus in your cervix which can prevent sperm from reaching, and fertilizing, the egg. It also changes the lining of your uterus.

Consult with your doctor before using Implanon if you:

  • are pregnant or think you may be pregnant; or are breastfeeding
  • have or have had blood clots;
  • have unexplained vaginal bleeding;
  • have liver disease;
  • have or have had breast cancer;
  • are allergic to any ingredients in Implanon
  • have high cholesterol or triglycerides
  • suffer from frequent headaches or migraines
  • have seizures or epilepsy
  • have gallbladder or kidney disease
  • have depression
  • high blood pressure

Implanon Side Effects

The main side effect is frequent or prolonged vaginal bleeding - which may affect a fifth of all users. Other possible side effects include:

  • headache
  • weight gain
  • breast tenderness
  • dizziness
  • depression
  • change in libido
  • change in your menstrual period
