Donning your glad rags and heading out for an evening's fun is something that a lot of ladies like to do. If you fancy finding yourself an evening dress that is slightly different then vintage styling can be a great option. Many modern pieces play on vintage styles and if you know what suits your body shape then finding the perfect dress should be an easy feat.

Whether you are heading out to a family function, birthday bash or dinner date, there should be an evening dress to match the occasion.

The empire line is a classic vintage shape and suits anyone with a pear shape or thick waist because the material skims over the bottom half, cunningly concealing any bits you would rather keep hidden.

Popular throughout the 70s, an empire cut dress has a high waistline which usually begins just beneath the bust and a long, full skirt that flows straight from this waistline. The empire style is also handy for creating an illusion of height for short or petite figures.

A ball gown is another well known evening dress option that can make you feel and look like a princess. An elegant option, a ball gown typically has a full skirt that begins at the natural waist and falls to the floor and because the ball gown style visually cuts the body in half it is ideal for taller ladies out there.

The princess gown, or A-line gown, is another elegant evening dress option for events where looking glamorous is necessary. A fitted bodice flares out from the natural waist to a full and bellowing skirt and the waist tends to be seamless.

This gently flared style flatters most body shapes and is particularly useful for anyone seeking to disguise large hips and/or thighs. The vintage princess gown is typical of late 60s and early 70s .fashion.

Another evening dress style that seems to be making a comeback is the bouffant gown which has a puffed-out skirt made from a sheer material such as net, nylon or silk. Similar to the princess gown, the flared skirt is perfect for disguising a bottom-heavy figure and a shorter version makes your legs the centre of attention.

Straight out of the swinging 60s, the mini dress is going through a resurgence and has remained popular over the years since its first arrival. From tulip shaped to strapless versions, there are hundreds of different types of mini dress out there so all you need to do is find the one you like the best. Mini dresses look particularly good on petite figures and make sure your legs look picture perfect as a large part of them will be on show!

Last but not least for evening dresses options, the flapper dress that was so popular in the 1920s has remained a firm favourite over the years. Exquisite beading and fringing makes this an all round classic look that can be worn by anyone.
