Though almost every bride shops for the gown with anticipation, most women do not spend a lot of time wondering where the bridal dress came from and the story around it. Obviously, current choices, such as wholesale wedding dresses mean that almost anyone can afford to look like a million dollars on their big day. Even so, this hasn't always been the case. Actually, the bridal gown as we know it hasn't even been around for a hundred years! Women have forever wanted to appear attractive on their big day. Even so, it wasn't always for the priorities that many current brides think. In the past, a lot of the weddings were staged as a means of convenience and social appearance. What a bride wore precisely affected how they were accepted socially. The more expensive the fabrics, the more standing she and her groom could presume to receive. That seemed particularly important if the marriage was political in nature, as was the case with many high profile marriages in times past. Surprisingly, white wasn't commonly used. The fashions of the day decided which styles and colors were the best for a certain nuptial. When the couple came from a poor or average family, things were somewhat different. Of course, every woman would appear in whatever she had that was nicest. A average woman may have a selection uniquely made for the occasion. Even so, it would probably be put in her regular closet following the fact. Women who did not have budgets for a special gown would just put on whatever she had that was nice. This was often a nice Sunday piece, the cleanest that she had. However, funds didn't dictate matches of convenience and status. In those times, practical was practical and one did what was needed to get ahead. Beginning at the turn of the century, white was a common color for a wedding dress. However, the fashions of the time nonetheless determined the trends. Of course, there wasn't anything like wedding dresses wholesalers. Many dresses were still custom made by individual dress designers. Beginning in the late 1940s, brides started to revert to a historically Victorian trend for wedding gowns and that remains today with some small adjustments. That was also the time in which department stores started to be in vogue and bridal gowns were more accessible to the average customer. Though this all probably will not change how you shop for your dresses, it is extremely interesting. Whether you browse wholesale wedding dresses or order your gown specially designed, know that there is a long and rich history that surrounds this fun tradition.
