Recent research shows that over 80% of keyphrases used are of the long tail variety. This means that the top 100 keyphrases aren't bringing the best traffic. A long tail keyphrases is a keyphrase that is far more specific to your website and means that your traffic will be more targeted. Further good news is that these keyphrases are usually less competitive. For example "TVs" are a very general keyphrase and there will be a lot of competitive for this but also a lot of traffic. If you sold 42" Sony TV's then this is a far more targeted keyphrase.

Let go into this in more detail, it is called a long tail keyphrase because this refers to the long tail effect. To better describe this lets look at Amazon they sell millions of products but they have over the years introduced many other products other than books. Research shows that a websites that sells only books or even a particular type of book will in effect be more collectively successful in the sales of books as they are far more targeted.

So you must make sure you select the correct targeted keyphrases that most relevant to your products or services. Doing extensive research into what your best keyphrases are will be essential to the success of your search engine optimisation campaign and must not be taken lightly. These will shape your content of your website as your website must reflect your keyphrase as best as possible as you want the search engines to return your pages first. To do this you're WebPages and your website must be relevant to the search query that a user types into the search engine Sony 42" TV's for example. If you don't sell this product then optimising for this keyphrase would be pointless and you can't expect a search engine to return your page as being relevant.

If you need help with search engine optimisation I would advice take a look at this companies top SEO results they are very impressive.

To compile the best keyphrase make a list of all your products or services and use things that you may think people will type into a search engine to find your website. This can be an extensive list and can take some time but you will feel the benefit in the long run. Then use a keyphrase research tool to best match your list with what people are actually searching for. Ask your colleagues and friends for suggestions as this might turn up some good keyphrases you may have missed.
