You have on average about 30 seconds to engage a website visitor with the message on your Coaching website before they leave your site. It is very important to keep the message on your website simple and concise. Include only enough information to encourage your visitor to take some action such as either contacting you or signing up for your newsletter. Some exceptions to the rule of keeping the content simple would be website pages dedicated to educating your potential students such as a ‘FAQ' page, ‘Resource' page, Articles, Forums or Blogs. (These are also important pages for getting listed in the search engines). Limit the text on an average web page to topics consistent with the name on the link or tab. Use the text on your website to highlight your Unique Selling Proposition (USP). This is the marketing-based content on your website that separates you from your competition. If your focus is ‘Corporate Coaching' you would want to stress the benefits of your service relative to your direct competition. Because of the importance of your USP, it is recommended to get marketing advice when writing your text, and having it reviewed or edited by a copywriter. Most Coaching websites try too hard to impress their prospects with a wealth of information about them and their services. In many cases their intention is to sell themselves and their services with the text on their websites. Selling a service is the last stage of the sales process and in many cases should be done either face-to-face or over the phone. The job of the text of the website should be focusing on the earlier stages of the sales process which are to develop interest and to create desire. This can be done with minimal content and then a call to action such as a prominent link to your contact page or products page. If you are selling products directly on your website through a shopping cart or through an e-commerce section of your website, you would also want to focus on driving or guiding the visitor to the shopping cart. Pictures also should be used in a minimalistic way. Many websites also overwhelm their visitors with pictures, many of which are totally unrelated to the message on the web page. It is important to use pictures as a way of breaking up the text, adding more creativity to the site, and to enhance the copy but they should be used sparingly. A good rule of thumb would be to add one picture to each web page that represents the message on that particular web page.
