What's currently on at Broadway? This season, they still run your old
time favorites: The Lion King, Hairspray, The Phantom of the Opera,
Mama Mia, and Mary Poppins. Best sellers indeed! But do you ever wonder
why these shows sell?
Making Broadway shows and selling them is big business. As a business, plays have to be a hit in the box office. To achieve this, the industry has to stick to what works. A good story line, bankable actors and most importantly, a good promotion campaign - these are what's needed to make money. A good advertising campaign is essential because it lets people know what is on, the start, and the play dates. Even if you have a good play and bankable actors if you don't have a good advertising strategy, chances are your venture would fail. So what do you think is the most commonly used advertising strategy for Broadway plays? Guess? If you have no idea, go there and take a look. You guessed that right poster printing. Like for any other business, poster printing makes sure that the play is noticed and anticipated by the public. Cheap posters, in general, are a good way to advertise. For Broadway shows, posters give the public an idea of what the play is all about, who are the actors or actresses in it and most importantly, would it be able entertain them at least for a good two hours. These three things are things that the public want to know and they can be addressed through a well designed, properly conceptualized color poster. Let us look at some ingredients of a well designed, well thought-of Broadway poster: 1. Capture the Story Line If it is a best seller, you don't need to go too much into this; but if this is a relatively unknown play, better whet your audience's appetite by providing a summary of the story line. Your poster printing must be able to capture the entire story. It must be able to give the public a feel of what the movie has to offer. Is it comedy? A political satire? A musicale? A Shakespearean play? Remember that pictures say a thousand words and the picture in your poster must be able to do that and more. 2. Highlight the Actors If you have popular actors in it, then by all means highlight their participation in the play. The actors in a play are not as influential as in the movies but if you have Hollywood actors in the play, better make sure that people know. There are bankable stars that a mere mention of their name or by just showing their faces in your poster printing is enough to attract the public. Be sure to use these celebrities as subjects of your poster. Capitalize on their crowd drawing powers. 3. Experiment with Designs One overlooked component of a good poster is the design itself. For instance, typefaces have personalities. They say something about themselves. These typefaces must complement the theme of the movie. There are specific typefaces for a specific genre. A horror flick would definitely have a different typeface from a supposedly light and funny one. There are many ways to skin a cat as there are a lot of ways to design a Broadway poster. There are still a lot of factors that might impinge on the ability of a play to sell. But one thing is for sure, a good advertising campaign reduces the possibility of an empty theater.
