The idea of taking a year out to see the world before a period of study or prior to settling down in a job is a tempting one for many. However, a large number of people are put off by the worry that a gap year will be hard to explain on their CV or that, by being away from the job market for an extended period of time, they will lose the competitive edge. To the contrary, gap years are often seen as a positive experience by prospective employers.
Embarking on an extended trip displays a number of the characteristics that are often looked for in candidates, for example; confidence, organisational abilities and drive. People who plan a round-the-world trip on their gap year are able to display that they are responsible and can take care of themselves in a variety of unfamiliar situations and surroundings. While on the other hand, people who choose to settle in one country for an extended stay prove that they can apply themselves to fitting into a new environment. Many people also choose to seek employment in other countries during their gap years, therefore proving their adaptability. Working holidays can provide a particularly good CV boost as they demonstrate the candidate's willingness to work hard to achieve their ambitions, which in that case would be seeing another country. Learning another language is another reason that many people choose to embark on a gap year and this is a motive that potential employers tend to find particularly encouraging. A second language can prove extremely useful in a competitive job market and can sometimes provide an edge over similarly qualified competitors. A gap year shouldn't all be about work however, it also allows the chance for great personal growth. Not only do they provide the chance to learn about other cultures but they also tend to teach many people how important the ability to budget is. For example, finding out about the best way to make cheap calls to Germany or discovering which vendors offer the most favourable exchange rate in Brazil becomes an invaluable life skill when travelling and it is a skill that can then be applied to future endeavours. By paying attention to the abilities gained along the way and being sure to highlight areas in which people believe they have grown, a gap year can become a great selling point when entering the job market as well as an unforgettable life experience.
