A Change is as Good as a Rest when it comes to New Year

With Christmas comes a copious amount of consumption. From turkey and trimmings, to chocolate and cheese, the festive period is a time when countless people the world over indulge in a veritable feast of fine food, wine...and even more food and wine.

So by the time New Year comes around a mere seven days later, anyone could be forgiven for lacking a little on the enthusiasm front. Moreover, there is so much pressure to go out and celebrate the arrival of a new year; it often leads to disappointment, with pubs, clubs and many street parties charging exorbitant amounts to cram into overcrowded spaces.

This may paint an overly-dismal picture of what is supposed to be a period of celebration, but it is a reality for many people and one that will resonate across all demographics.

Furthermore, many would argue that the best New Years have been when it is treated like a normal weekend; with stifled expectations and an ‘easy come, easy go' attitude, this can often make for the best nights out.

After a hectic, hedonistic Christmas though, simply getting away and having a change of scenery for a few days can be the best way of spending the New Year period. Moreover, there's no need to venture too far: the UK is full of fantastic destinations, catering for all requirements.

If relaxation is what the doctor ordered, then there are countless spa resorts offering extensive leisure services including swimming pools, thermal suites, rock and bio saunas, aromatherapy steam and laconium rooms and beauty and massage parlours.

Then there are neat country retreats, providing short-term hideaway holidays for those needing a little bit of time to themselves.

It doesn't have to be all about relaxation though. People who are looking for something a little less sedate can jump on a plane, train or automobile and head to the bright lights of London and take in a show in Theatreland, visit the plethora of museums that are available and soak in the atmosphere of what is one the world's greatest cities.

So there's no shortage of things to do and New Year breaks to suit all tastes and budgets are available with a few clicks of a mouse.

Of course, things do tend to get busy at that time of year so it is always wise to plan ahead to avoid disappointment. A nice hotel in a choice location can mean New Year doesn't turn into a damp squib and it may even turn out to be one of the highlights of the year; and whether it's spa resorts or a city break in London, a change is most certainly as good as a rest.
