The magic of holidaying in Paxos

This year many of us will be taking time off work to go on holiday to escape to the sun, probably Spain or Greece. These two countries are very popular with UK tourists as they cannot resist a bit of Mediterranean sun.

One perfect example of these summer getaways is the island of Paxos in Greece. Just off the coast of Corfu, Paxos is only 10km long and 4km wide but is still favoured by holiday makers for it's amazing scenery, friendly locals and peaceful atmosphere.

Paxos is even regarded highly in the lore of the ancient Greek gods, apparently Poseidon struck the southern point of Corfu with his trident and a small island broke off which he used as his love nest for his Amphytriti. This island became known as Paxos.

As one of the smallest Ionian Islands it keeps that romantic image to this day as many couples enjoy holidaying on the quiet and relaxing island. Typically around July and August the island gets it's share of summer tourism with many Italians and Greek people arriving via yachts. Yachts are a popular mode of transport as the gentle Ionian breeze and crystalline seas make for perfect boating conditions whether you're a seasoned pro or an amateur.

Once you're done boating around the island there are two sheltered harbours at Loggos and Lakka where you can drop anchor and sample some of the cuisine in the tavernas in these towns. Many of the locals will have summer jobs working in these restaurants for the influx of tourists coming to Paxos. During the winter months they will either help with the olive oil harvest or have a well deserved break!

Paxos is famous for it's Olive Oil production and is highly regarded as being of high quality but also producing olive oil shampoos and soaps.

Of all the islands in Greece Paxos is a relatively undiscovered beauty, it is tourist friendly but is also a quiet small retreat for anyone who wants where they can relax in an idyllic surrounding forgetting about the stresses back home.
