Hurricane Ike made it's entrance into Galveston TX alongside it's 100 mph winds and strong storm surge on September 13th, leaving ten feet of flooding in it's historic downtown area and thousands with destroyed homes. Though Hurricane Ike devastated Galveston Island, it did not destroy the island's character and spirit. Though still on the road to recovery, Galveston TX hotels, restaurants, bars and pubs are beginning to reopen. Come visit to see Galveston after Hurricane Ike as the island proudly welcomes visitors to its 27th annual Oktoberfest, which will go on as scheduled. Oktoberfest will take place in Galveston's historic district and will be appropriately called "IKE's OverFEST." To further the process of mending Galveston after Hurricane Ike, the Galveston Chamber of Commerce will present a Business Recovery Expo on October 17th, 2008. The show will go on November 1st when the Beach Boys put on a benefit concert in efforts to help rebuild Galveston after Hurricane Ike. For the holidays you can gather the entire family to come and celebrate the 35th Annual Dickens on The Strand, December 6-7, 2008. And of course no one can resist enjoying the largest American Motorcyclists Association Sanctioned Event in America, the 2008 Lone Star Rally is being held in Galveston December 11-14. The historic Galveston TX hotels are now beginning to open their doors again. The Hotel Galvez had opened its restaurant just a few days after the storm to service those rebuilding the island; they have also been ahead of the curve in restoration efforts. The Hotel Galvez is now open and serving all guests with their full service restaurant and bar, meeting space, pool, and comfortable guest rooms. The hotel's sister property, the Historic Tremont House Hotel, located in the Strand District, is scheduled to reopen in early 2009.
