The Enchanted Palace

With the kids back at school after the Easter holidays, mums can breathe a sigh of relief. But the half term will soon be upon you, so why not start planning activities now?

If you are staying in England this May, and have a daughter who loves sparkles and fairies, then the Enchanted Palace is perfect.

"the builders have arrived and the palace is being transformed, it has been turned inside out and its stories and secrets shaken out with the dust. They tell of the lives of princesses caught within the strange and mysterious world of the court - a world within a world, governed by its own time and rituals."

Created in a similar way to Alice in Wonderland, the exhibition is open while important renovation works are being done on Kensington Palace. The exhibition is dreamy and fantastic, with snippets of information given out, and things for you to do as you go around.

It is based on the seven princesses who have lived in the palace, including Princess Diana, and exhibits dresses and jewellery that they wore during their reign. You are given a pencil and map when you enter, and are asked to find the names of all of the princesses as you traverse the rooms. My favourite, the room of dancing dresses, features three royal dresses in glass cases, ornate and jewelled, and an explanation of when they were worn during the reign. The lighting in this room is blue, and trees spring up out of the ground, to make you feel that you are walking in the woods. Equally as charming is the room of the sleeping princess, with the description ‘in this room of the golden bed, a princess woke to find she was a queen. Constrained by day, she is free in her dreams ...' the beauty of this room however, is the dress that hangs from the ceiling, made of a bodice, and hundreds of origami cranes. Ornate and beautiful, it wows even the heaviest of hearts.

It's an interesting take on a royal exhibition, and one not to be missed. Make sure that you have Travel Insurance for your holidays, wherever you may be going.
