Switzerland holidays - great in summer, not just winter

Switzerland has long featured on many skiers' winter destinations list, but it is also one of Europe's best summer destinations, offering breathtaking views of lush green valleys and snow-topped peaks combined with a cornucopia of marvellous outdoor activities.

In summer, many people on walking holidays head to the town of Davos, set almost 5,200 feet above sea level. Here a funicular railway carries countless visitors from the heart of the Davos Platz up to Schatzalp where they can enjoy the fine Alpine botanical garden and the summer sledge run, with the option of popping into the Hotel Schatzalp for a drink and taking in the spectacular views over the Davos Valley also available. Cable car rides are also available throughout the valley, taking visitors as high as 8,000 feet above sea level to partake in a spot of trekking or merely gaze over the beautiful valley.

Nearby, the 13th century town of Klosters is also incredibly active during the summer. Originally a monastic retreat, Klosters sits at the top of the Prattigau Valley in Eastern Switzerland and is classed as a medium-sized Swiss village. Less than two hours from Zurich, it is a relaxed resort throughout the year. Summer activities include taking a horse-drawn carriage through some truly spectacular scenery, perhaps to the cheese dairy. Trips to the heated swimming pool, tennis courts and family walks provide further options.

Nestling high up on a natural sun terrace in the Schanfigger Valley, the beautiful and eminently peaceful resort of Arosa is the starting point for a fantastic range of summer activities. Here the visitor can choose from fishing, lake swimming, horse riding and, for anyone staying overnight in a hotel in the area, free cable car rides at one of the highest resorts in Switzerland.

Switzerland holidays are anything but mundane during summer as many visitors choose to partake in some exciting sports such as paragliding in the valleys, or cycling up the twisting and turning mountain roads. The beautifully crisp alpine air and the stunning views are both incredibly alluring to visitors in summer.

Between June and September there is also the option to get an inclusive card allowing free transport throughout certain regions on local transport, mountain railways, and cable cars, as well as unlimited access to ice rinks, sports and family swimming pools and tennis courts. The resorts of Villars, Davos, Klosters, Arosa and the ultra-glamorous St. Moritz are all included in the Summer Card scheme, meaning that mountain holidays in Switzerland offer a truly spectacular, action-packed time for all the family!
