Plan Ahead to Get the Most out of South Africa

Some of the world's best players will be on display at this year's World Cup and no matter if you're most excited about seeing Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney or Cristiano Ronaldo; if you travel unprepared to South Africa you're likely to miss out on a lot more outside the stadiums.

The most prepared will have booked their hotels for their stays months ago to ensure they had secured accommodation near to the stadiums they had tickets for. This gives these visitors less travel time to matches and therefore more time to explore the city and to soak up the pre-game atmosphere.

Vans selling burgers, chips and other foodstuffs will be prevalent near to stadiums - perfect for the football fan in a hurry; but not so great for someone with specific dietary requirements or someone watching their figure. Each city will have its own twist on global cuisine and, like anywhere in the world, each will have its share of high and low quality eateries. Unless you want to spend your trip eating fast food, booking tables ahead of time is a certain way to get in the best restaurants.

As well as booking restaurants, it's a good idea to book transport on match days. Unless you're certain you're going to be able to walk to the stadium in time you might want to book a taxi from your hotel or an attraction you want to visit before the game to make sure you make kick off.

Of course, there are always unscrupulous people out looking to make money from tourists and crowds, so only carry the money you really need and make sure your tickets are safe and in sight at all times. It's best to keep valuable items in waist pouches that can be hidden under clothing, or inside belts with hidden compartments to discourage thieves.

Some football fans may also need extra aid getting around the stadium and its best to check with each ground about procedures. Cheap calls to South Africa are available from Britain meaning it's possible to make sure you know where to go and how early to arrive, in order to make sure you get to your seat on time.

As well as the football this summer, South Africa has much to offer. Whether you want to take in the suburban life of the major cities or go wild and check out the safaris and wildlife that is normally restricted to zoo viewing, South Africa is one of the greatest places to go for this.

Travellers who plan their trip before leaving home will find that they have a much more enjoyable and fun packed time than those who go purely to watch the football and while away the hours in between - unless their team wins the tournament, of course!
