New York: The City That Never Sleeps

The definition of a city is a centre of population, commerce and culture, and a place of significant size and importance. And whilst most cities on earth certainly tick the boxes on all these counts, in many people's eyes, a true city has a little extra added ingredient.

Indeed, many cities have skyscrapers, shopping precincts, museums and a population stretching well into the millions. But there are only a handful of cities on Earth that have what can only be described as a buzz; a special atmosphere that makes simply being there a thrill in itself. As such, Paris, Tokyo and London certainly all fall into this category. But there is perhaps one city that eclipses all others in terms of having that extra special something.

As the USA's most populous metropolis - and one of the world's true ‘global cities' - New York is probably the finest example of what makes a truly great city. Whilst there is enough to keep the most discerning of visitors occupied for months, simply wandering the wide avenues and boulevards of this gigantic hub of 24-hour activity is enough to make the most cynical of tourists wide-eyed in wonder. The famous yellow taxis, hot-dog stalls and a skyline that is recognisable by its silhouette alone all contribute to what makes this destination so special.

And one of the city's many monikers - ‘the city that never sleeps' - is entirely justified too. Whether it's 10am or 10pm, the streets are continuously packed with throngs of people covering every demographic imaginable.

But of course, there does come a point when the wandering has to make way for some serious sightseeing. For those with not a lot of time on their hands, then it's possible to see all the key landmarks in a couple of days. The Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Times Square should be at the top of any visitor's tourism ‘to do' list. And it's the latter of these that perhaps best epitomises what New York is all about.

Famous for its giant, animated neon-lit advertisements, Times Square is an awesome spectacle at night and it is here that the bright lights, big-city buzz can be experienced best.

But for those who have a little more time to explore the wider delights of this city, then there is no shortage of places to go. Indeed, if you have an interest for cafes, boutiques and to sample a more bohemian lifestyle, then there is the southern Manhattan district of Greenwich Village. In addition, in Manhattan there is also Central Park - a large, sprawling urban park which offers lakes, a zoo, ice-skating rinks and walking tracks - which is worthy of a couple of days' exploration in itself.

And with so much to do in this vibrant, cosmopolitan metropolis, it's little wonder that New York hotels are always in great demand. But regardless of the type of attractions you are interested in, you are sure to find something for everyone in what truly is the city that never sleeps..
