There are a lot of armchair quarterbacks out there have been considering which is the best choice since LCD and Plasmas became available in the retail world. Fortunately, most of the capabilities of these technologies are known now.

The case for plasma-Right off the bat, it's important to point out that if picture quality is the only thing being considered, plasma wins. Hands down. In principle, you should get a plasma TV. Picking out a television is never that easy in practice, though. For starters, it's next to impossible to get a plasma in less than 32 inches. That rules out putting one in the bedroom or some other location. Of course, if a secondary TV in the house is that important, then the plasma is still a respectable choice. Just be aware that it's unlikely to be very compact.

Making the choice of an LCD will present with a bit lesser picture clarity than the plasma, but there are other positive qualities for it. If you are very eco minded you will appreciate the fact that an LCD is a bit more energy efficient than a plasma screen. It will consume about 80 watts less per hour than a same sized plasma which isn't alot but if you like to consider every small watt then this may be a selling feature for you.

You may be somewhat compromised on the picture quality for an LCD compared to the plasma but one benefit the LCD has is that it won't experience burn in. Plasmas can experience something called burn in if the screen is left on just one frame for a long period. Then that picture can burn into the screen and ruin a perfectly good picture. This occurs on computers but they have screen savers to save them. But unless you watch the same channel all day you shouldn't have an issue with burn in on the plasma.

The remaining comparison left after this discussion is in the cost of the television. If you look at it very strictly the plasma will come in at a cheaper price per square inch of the product. It's not a big difference and as time goes by the electricity used might fill up that gap in the cost but it really is dependent on the price of the product.
