Everybody has heard of Rio, if not for the famous annual Carnival, at least for the fact that it has been the capital of Brazil until 1960, when the capital moved to Brasilia. Among other things, the city is also famous for the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer, placed on the top of the Corcovado Mountain, and proclaimed one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in the Southeast of Brazil, following Sao Paolo.

The city benefits from the blessing of spectacular natural setting. Other attractions for the tourists include the famous Copacabana beach and Maracana stadium, one of the biggest football stadiums in the world. Founded in 1565 by the Portuguese, the town originally had the name of "Sao Sebastiano do Rio de Janeiro 20", but today everyone calls it Rio de Janeiro, or simply Rio. Another nickname for the city is "A Cidade Maravilhosa", in translation "the marvelous city" and if you travel to Rio de Janeiro, you will understand why they have named it as such. By the way, "Cidade Maravilhosa" is also the official song of Rio.

Between 1960 and 1975 Rio was a city-state, like Vienna or Washington D.C., under the name "State of Guanabara". Today it is the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Even if it is not the capital of the country anymore, Rio remains an important economical and cultural center of Brazil. The Campos Basin, situated nearby, provides most of the total Brazilian oil production. This is why many important oil and gas companies have settled here, including the Brazilian branch of Shell Company.

To what concerns cultural events in Rio de Janeiro, perhaps the most famous of them is the Carnival, an annual celebration that marks the beginning of Christian Lent and ends on the "Mardi Gras" Tuesday. If you want to take part in the Carnival, you have to travel to Rio de Janeiro about 40 days before Easter. You will certainly not regret it. Samba dance, traditional food and many people having fun gather in this popular celebration.

The Carnival is not the only important cultural event in Rio de Janeiro. New Year is also a major event and people celebrate it, like in any other major city in the world, with concerts and many impressive fireworks. The largest New Year party takes place at the Copacabana beach, where people in white clothes make offerings to a traditional Candomble deity called "lemanja".

If you like to party all night long, you certainly have to travel to Rio de Janeiro, as nightlife here is popular worldwide. Among the famous Rio clubs are Baronneti, Nuth and Catwalk, where various celebrities are said to come. About famous sport events in Rio, MotoGP Brazilian Grand Prix and the World Beach volleyball finals are two of them. The most popular sport here is "futebol" (soccer), Rio de Janeiro being home of four traditional football clubs.

If you travel to Rio de Janeiro, be sure to visit Tijuca Forest, a huge rainforest spreading right in the middle of the city. It is the second world's largest forests in an urban area (the first one, Pedra Branca, State park, is just nearby). With a large variety of fauna and flora, the forest is a magical place of peace and relaxation. With its multicultural society and unique mix of cultures and traditions, Rio is a perfect holiday destination.
