The UK's historic capital is full of unique attractions and experiences that have entertained visitors for centuries, and helped London achieve the distinction of being the world's most visited city. However, experienced visitors will know that there's a great deal more to discover beyond the city limits, with many of the UK's top attractions being only a short drive from the capital. Following are five suggestions for great days out near London, suitable for the whole family.

If you're looking for convenient days out near London, nearby Windsor is the perfect destination for a range of activities in the peaceful English countryside, away from the noise and bustle of the capital. From exploring historic Windsor Castle to a fun-packed day out at Legoland, Windsor is ideally situated for family day trips out of London, less than 30 miles west of the city.

Another top family destination close to London is Chessington World of Adventures & Zoo, which combines thrilling theme park rides with a diverse zoo and Sea Life Centre, making for a fascinating and educational day out. Chessington is only 12 miles south of the city centre, and offers free parking for visitors all year round.

If it's a relaxing day out you're looking to enjoy, some of the UK's most popular country and coastal breaks can be found within easy reach of London. The seaside town of Brighton has always been a favourite escape for Londoners, offering relaxing views and traditional seafront entertainment on England's south coast. Brighton is also host to England's largest arts festival, with each May seeing the Brighton Festival take place at venues across the town.

There are also many enjoyable breaks to be found near London for those who prefer to head inland, such as a trip to Stratford-Upon-Avon in Warwickshire, the birthplace of England's finest bard, William Shakespeare. The county is also home Warwick Castle, the site of many medieval festivals throughout the year that celebrate Britain's unique history.

Finally, adventurous travellers can head even further into the past by making the trip to Stonehenge, the world famous Neolithic monument in Wiltshire that experts believe was constructed around 3,500 years ago. The monument is open to visitors all year round, and is easily reached on the motorway network from London's airports, making car hire in London the most convenient and practical means to get the most out of edifying breaks in the UK.
