Forget the West End: London isn't the only city in the UK with top quality theatre. Although the big smoke's theatre district is revered for a reason, that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of other places in Britain that can rival the English capital when it comes to incredible acting, breathtaking performances and inspiring new writing.

Manchester's theatre scene has long been noted for providing the utmost in entertainment. Like any city worth its artistic salt, Manchester is packed with many opportunities for taking in your favourite styles of production. No matter what you like most, from straight drama to comedy, stand up to musical, massive concerts to operas and book readings to showcases of the city's best new talent, Manchester has it all.

You can enjoy a visit to the overwhelming Manchester Opera House, the theatre that is not only beautiful but big, too. Seating nearly 2000 people, the Manchester Opera House hosts ballet, concerts, the biggest touring musicals and, of course, a large-scale Christmas pantomime that has adults and children alike clamouring for more each year. It's also famous for being the theatre that hosted the European premier of West Side Story - which took place in 1958 - as well as the UK regional premier of astounding production The Phantom of the Opera.

It's not the only theatre in this vibrant and buzzing city, however. There are plenty of others to choose from - such as the impressive Palace Theatre, which happens to be the Manchester Opera House's sister theatre and survived a direct hit from a German bomb in 1940 in order to continue putting on the fantastic productions it's known for today. You can also make the most of the Royal Exchange Theatre, which is a Grade II listed building known for its gorgeous Victorian architecture that makes way for a night at the theatre to be made even more special. This theatre is also known to present several musical events each year, as well as literary events from award winning authors.

Smaller theatres in Manchester include organisations like the Contact Theatre, which offers young people the chance to enjoy some fantastic performances, and the Dancehouse, the aptly-named company that focuses on dance productions.

There are so many fantastic theatrical locations in Manchester that it's well worth planning your visits before you step off your Manchester flights. Whether you're hoping to enjoy the top drama from London or this year's enigmatic pantomime, you're sure to have an amazing time.
