As the most populous city in south-west England and a finalist for the 2008 European Capital of Culture, Bristol is an often-overlooked gem of a city, with a long history dating back as far as the 11th century, and a stunning harbour setting by the River Avon. This compact city is a great place for a short city-break in one of the many Bristol hotels that are in the area, or even a longer holiday, given its great location by the sea and its proximity to two capital cities - Cardiff AND London, both of which are easily accessible as day-trips.
