Boston is a city in the USA, situated about 220 miles north of New York. Boston is found in the state of Massachusetts and is one of the oldest cities in the United States, making it an intriguing place to explore. The largest city in New England, Boston is considered the economic and cultural centre and is sometimes regarded as the unofficial New England capital. There are more than 600,000 residents in the city whereas the larger metropolitan of Greater Boston is home to around 4.5 million people. Boston is brimming with things to do, places to visit and sights to see. If you fancy finding out a little more about the city's history then make a beeline for some of the best museums. The National Heritage Museum focuses on the rich diversity of American life across four centuries. Everyone and everything, from George Washington to Elvis, are included. The Charles River Museum of Industry looks at industry and technology over the years whereas the Nichols House Museum offers a unique glimpse into late 19th and early 20th century domestic life on Boston's historic Beacon Hill. The four-story townhouse was built in 1804 during the early development of Beacon Hill. The original features and furnishings have been retained and you can really get a glimpse of what Boston life was like in years gone by. The oldest house in Boston is the Paul Revere House which, as the name suggests, was once owned by the American silversmith. Boston National Historical Site is a good all rounder as it includes the Old State House, Faneuil Hall and the Bunker Hill Monument. You can learn about African American history by walking the Black Heritage Trail and if you are a baseball enthusiast then head to the famous Fenway Park stadium and catch a game while you're on holiday. If you are likely to visit a few museums then it might be worth investing in a CityPass which gets you into six museums (NE Aquarium, JFK Library, John Hancock Observatory, MFA, Gardner Museum and Museum of Science) for a discount. Beacon Hill is the trendy part of the city where you can dine al fresco and peruse the many boutiques that line the streets. Little Italy is the place to head for divine pastries and downtown has historic streets and points of interest. Outside of the city centre you can take a trip to the pretty and historic town Salem for a day of whale-watching. Cape Cod is another well know New England hotspot that offers great seafood and even greater beaches. Most Boston Flights arrive at Boston Logan Airport, eight miles north-east of the city centre so you can be at the heart of all the activity shortly after touchdown.
