Argentina is a wonderful country and one of the most visited in Latin America. However, it is so immense that it can be hard deciding where to go and what to visit. Salta is one of the highlights of any trip to Argentina, situated in the northern part of the country. It is a beautiful colonial city boasting a particularly rich culture and fascinating history. Salta's surroundings are equally beautiful and filled with natural wonders and quaint villages that also deserve a visit. Here are a few must see in Salta and the region. Salta is the biggest city in northern Argentina, and as such, home to an array of excellent museums, historic buildings, beautiful architecture, and a vibrant nightlife. Most of the city's sights are concentrated in the center, next to the main square, Plaza 9 de Julio. On the plaza itself, you will find the Museo Historice del Norte, which holds an interesting collection of religious and modern art. Another must-see museum for all art buffs, is the Museo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Museum), housed in a beautiful colonial mansion. One of the most sumptuous sights in Salta is the 19th century cathedral, where the ashes of General Martin de Güemes, one of the main figures of the Argentinean independence movement, are held. Another great way to experience the beauty of Salta is to ride on its Teleferico, from which you'll get the most extraordinary view of the entire city. You can hop on the cable car in Parque San Martin, and ride it all the way to the San Bernardo Mountain, from where you can enjoy views of the city and the surrounding mountain range. Salta's surroundings are also worth visiting and home to incredible sights. Start with a leisurely stroll through the streets of Cachi, a small town not far from the city. Full with traditions, narrow streets, and old houses, Cachi is a charming town with a rich culture, combining Spanish and indigenous traditions. Wine amateurs will revel in the beautiful vineyards and exquisite wines produced in Cafayate another town of the Salta region. Thanks to its high altitude and dry, sunny climate, Cafayate has the perfect climate conditions to grow excellent grapes, making it a growing wine destination in Argentina, after Mendoza. Finally, make sure to visit the Jujuy valley during your Salta vacation. This marvelous region is particularly picturesque, and filled with fascinating pre-Incan archeological sites. The furthest point in the Jujuy valley is Pumamarca, and on the way, you can stop at San Antonio de los Cobres, the largest settlement in the area, boasting great view points.
