The shoreline of Banderas Bay, on Mexicos Pacific coast, attracts visitors for a number of reasons, simply by virtue of its bay-ness deep sea fishing, wind surfers, beach bodies all of these bring out the adventure in folks. One unique feature that may come as a pleasant and visually lovely surprise is the delightful collection of sculpture that lines the bay along the Malecon. Imagine a world-class outdoor museum, only minutes from your Puerto Vallarta vacation rental.

See it, feel it
Visitors and art lovers are welcome to browse the open-air pieces at their own pace. Its a nice stroll, one that combines an opportunity to soak up some rays with the chance to drink in some culture. And one of the nicest things about exploring fine art in this setting is that whatever your interest is in this work, you can march right up to each sculpture and go face-to-face with it.

Until you have done it, you have no idea how much fun you can have when you engage with art on your terms. Run your hands over La Nostalgia, and marvel at the cool, smooth surfaces. Pull up a piece of ground beneath The Millenium, and watch how the passing clouds create an endlessly different backdrop for it. And when you need a breather, walk on down the Malecn and rest your dogs at La Rotunda del Mar, a unique grouping of sculpture/chairs.

There is more much more, and youre not going to want to miss a single piece.
  • One sculpture has become particularly closely identified with the city: Caballo del Mar, an elegant bronze depiction of a young boy riding a giant seahorse. Hurricane Kenna washed the original work into the bay; artist Rafel Zamarripa re-created his work, and now it enjoys a more central place along the Malecn.

  • There is only one fountain to be found on the boardwalk, and it happens to be one of the sculptures, as well. The Friendship Fountain features three dolphins that symbolize the friendship between the city of Puerto Vallarta and its sister city, Santa Barbara, California.

  • Take a good look at the art in your Puerto Vallarta vacation rental, and you might recognize something done by artist Sergio Bustamante. He is the creator of the bronze, In Search of Reason, children on a ladder and mother watching from below. He has a gallery across the street on the other side of the Malecon where more of his work, including jewelry, is available for sale.
