With the hassles of working life and all the tiresome news of credit crunches and financial woes, quite often we may feel like escaping from all the stress and taking some time for ourselves. There's no better remedy than to escape to the country and relax and there's no better place in England to do that than the Lake District in Cumbria.

The highlight of the British countryside is home to vast lakes and towering fells and mountains. It attracts thousands of visitors every year and for a multitude of reasons too. Obviously hiking and fell walking are popular pastimes for many visitors to the Lakes as well as yachting on Lake Windermere where you will see many small pleasure boats at the docks in Woodside and Ambleside at opposite ends of the lakes.

Many of the small towns like Ambleside have a booming arts and crafts trade; painters will often spend hours on a hillside and paint wonderful depictions of the lakes and their surroundings which can be bought from galleries often run by the artists themselves. There are other crafts such as glass blowing and candle making shops to appeal to the creative tourists.

Once you've spent all afternoon fell walking or bike riding you'll be ready for a good meal, with many traditional pubs and restaurants dotted throughout the towns and countryside offering traditional British food that won't fail to impress.

Staying in the Lake District is simple; tourism being one of the dominating industries in the area with Bed and Breakfasts, hotels and self-catering establishments throughout the National Park. A particular area that is popular is Ulverston in the southern Lakeland area.

Ulverston has the benefit of being the gateway to the Lake District and is also within driving distance of Morecombe Bay too, but also calls itself a "festival town" due to the amount of celebrations that go on in the area such as a Dickensian festival, Flag Festival and obviously a Beer Festival. It isn't without its share of celebrities too with comedian Stan Laurel and English Statesman John Barrow both being born in Ulverston.

As you can see the Lake District can provide a welcoming haven from working life and let you get a breath of fresh country air in an amazing environment that will take your breath away.
