To begin with, you might want to look for stores and shops that participate in the Tax Back program (not all stores do, so ask if you're not certain). Save your receipts. When you get to the airport to start winging your way home (yes, it's a sad day when you check out of your villa Puerto Vallarta), step up to one of the special kiosks and present your receipts. And fill out the paperwork. Details, Details Honestly, have you ever known this kind of program that didn't require paperwork? So go ahead and fill it out, because it's worth it in the end. In case you're wondering exactly how worth it, well, that's the complicated part. There is a minimum amount that you must spend on the item you purchase, although if you purchase several items in one shop and reach that minimum, it may qualify. On the other hand, there is an upper limit on the amount of cash you can spend and see a refund. To get a refund on a really big purchase, you might be well advised to pay with plastic. Clearly, this is an opportunity that requires a bit of thought (and maybe the assistance of a tax accountant). On the other hand, you might find the knowledge that a refund is awaiting you at the airport to be an extra incentive on your shopping expeditions.
