This year many of us will be searching for a place in the sun to spend a few weeks away from home and the stresses of work. Greece and Spain are two popular holiday spots for British tourists with the Mediterranean and Ionian Islands being especially popular for summer getaways. Kefalonia used to boast the same beautiful buildings of similar islands in the Ionian Sea but many were destroyed by bombing in the wars and further demolished by an earthquake in 1953 and unfortunately there are only a few resorts left with their original Venetian buildings. That is not to say that Kefalonia is void of beauty, the natural landscape of Kefalonia more than makes up for the loss, mountains covered in Fir tree forests are perfect for hikers to enjoy as well as making the trip in a hire car to another resort much more pleasant than being trapped in the car in the blazing sun. The majority of Kefalonia's tourist areas are in the southern half of the island specifically the south west of the island, these can be pretty busy but if you are after a more relaxing time with less of your fellow tourists cluttering up your space then there a re plenty of more quieter resorts the further you travel north. Like most holidays in Greece and Spain what we're most looking forward to is the beaches for us to lounge on. Kefalonia is not short of beaches, there are many beaches along the coastline of Kefalonia as well as amazing underground caves in Melisani and Drogoratti that could provide a bit of shade if you've spent too long laid out in the sun! Kefalonia is very popular for holidays in Greece as it came to prominence a few years ago with the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin being set on the island, so if you want to join the many people holidaying on Kefalonia then why not give it a shot this year?
