Since that time we have see balloons modified somewhat to fit our more modern tastes but the technology behind hot air ballooning remains essentially the same as it was back in the late 1700s. Today we find balloons of all shapes and colors and they have become a popular choice for advertising and sponsorship. The technology behind hot air ballooning is relatively simple. A wicker basket, or gondola, is taken aloft by a nylon fabric balloon that is inflated with hot air. The heated air creates buoyancy because it has a lower density that the air outside it. The flame that creates the hot air is produced by an open flame, or burner. The ascent and descent is controlled by the amount of hot air that is sent up into the balloon, or envelope. What makes hot air ballooning different from other aviation is the lack of mechanical means of propulsion. It is this lack of mechanics that creates the magical atmosphere that is hot air ballooning. As you ascend you will hear the blast of the burner. Once aloft the sound of the burner goes away and your hot air ballooning experience becomes one of wonderful silence. The balloon will be pushed gently along by the air currents and while there is air flow, you will not hear a rushing of wind. The basket will sway gently but the factors that can make air flight uncomfortable for some people - primarily the feeling created by propulsion - are not there so even people who typically do not enjoy flying can have a wonderful experience.
