Many people do not understand the ideals that martial arts offer. In the movie, "The Karate Kid,
" a number of scenes helps to show how much heart is part of the martial arts community. Mr. Miyagi tries to teach the young Daniel that Karate is not meant to be used for fighting but to help someone defend him or herself. Throughout the movie you can see how important being part of the martial arts community is to Daniel.

A great deal of training is part of the practice and attention to detail that a teacher or sensei can provide for anyone who wants to learn more about martial arts. The physical and mental practices that make up this sport can be difficult. By joining the martial arts community, an individual provides him or herself with a resource that can help to make the transition to an expert in the sport possible. Martial arts require a higher level of ideals than some other physical sports because of its mental aspects.

For those who join a Dojo and have the opportunity to compete locally or nationally with others in the same sport, understand that the trophy is not necessarily the object of winning. Learning from other athletes who participate in martial arts is an integral part of being successful in the sport. Many different stories have been told that reveal how the one you least suspect might be the one you should watch for.

In Aikido, the student learns that force from a competitor can be redirected. To explain how this is possible, an instructor tells the story of a young student who had trained for some time in the art of Aikido. He and his teacher were traveling by train when a young angry man boarded the train bearing a knife. While the young student began to consider his training, the teacher began talking quietly to the angry young man. He kept talking calmly to the young man and began to move forward. Eventually he took the knife from the man and directed him to a employee of the train.

The young student approached his teacher and explained that he finally understood why Aikido is known as the 'way of the open hand.' The teacher explained that the philosophy behind the martial art was not just something that people said but that it was an integral part. Being part of a martial arts community can help you to take a philosophy and learn to embrace it in a way you might not have considered before. High ideals can become part of your belief system, no matter what cultural background you have.

Although there are many different forms of martial arts to choose from, the martial arts community embraces all of them. Take advantage of the resources this community can provide so you can increase your ideals and allow you to get the most out of the sport. Martial arts is the guardian to this higher level of understanding that today's generation hopes to learn.
