Legal Aspects Of Sports Betting
Written by Adam Sandler

Sports betting is a game of speculation. It is a game of chance that can go either way with a probability of 0.5 on each side. Plenty of online sports book offer a chance to gamblers to bet on their favorite sport. Along with online casinos that offer slots, Poker, bingo etc. online, sports book claim major chunk of online betting. With the online sports betting, you can virtually sit in your comfort zone and place bets on football, hockey, basketball, horse racing, and cricket et al.

But if we look at the nature of sports betting, it is a game of chance. And some legal regimes of the world do not consider it proper to encourage betting as it could lead to other crimes in the lure of quick money. In the
US, the legality of online betting is left to the determination of the respective States. As regards offshore betting sites, it has not been declared illegal yet despite the best efforts of the legislators.

Some states, like
Illinois, have enacted a legislation that strictly prohibits the advertising of online casinos. Three states - California, Louisiana, and Nevada - have strict prohibitions on betting beyond State borders. But these laws are not strictly enforced. Most states consider gambling violations misdemeanors with majority focusing specifically on betting operators rather than the actual gamblers. With the government repeatedly attempting to pass a legislation prohibiting online gambling, most operators have preferred to set up offshore bases, in Caribbean countries, where the laws are lenient.

The international trend, particularly the WTO and the
UK courts, seems to be in favor of online betting. The liberalized trade regime does not want to curb the freedom of Internet. But, instead, is in favor of regulations that might be strictly enforced to control the illegal activities in the garb of online betting.
