Softball is a sports game that has been enjoyed by over forty million Americans for both recreation and entertainment. It has also been regarded as the safest sports activity due to the fact that there is only a slight risk for injury in softball. Still, softball conditioning is very important as injury can happen when there is no sufficient preparation and know-how of the game. As you may not know, mostly, softball injuries occur due to improper contacts, incorrect sliding methods as well as a deficiency in conditioning.

If you want to have a proper and effective softball conditioning program for you as well as for the rest of your team, you need to be able to blend in activities that aims to step up blood circulation and heart rate for a specific amount of time such as aerobic exercises, brisk walking and jogging. It is also beneficial to train the muscles in the arms, legs and back at least twice a week as suggested by the American College of Sports Medicine. But you must also make sure that you rest for forty eight hours in between muscle training so that, you give your muscles ample time for conditioning and growth.

It is also important for you to keep your body conditioned even during the off season such as during winter as it would be difficult to get back into shape during the short period of time when softball season finally comes. So, softball players must also have ample fitness training program during the cold months.

Aside from a proper fitness training program, softball players must also perform the following in order to strengthen the body in order to avoid physical injuries.

  1. Always be sure to perform warm-up exercises such as stretching before you play and in between innings. Stretch your muscles in the arms, legs, hips and back and be sure to focus on your muscles that you use during the game such as your shoulders.

  1. Be sure to avoid sliding when stationary bases are utilized to avoid collisions.

  1. Always remember to utilize correct sliding methods. As the Institute for Preventive Sports Medicine has indicated, incorrect sliding techniques cause more than seventy percent of softball injuries.

  1. Always use approved batting helmets with protective ear flaps on both sides for batting and base running. You can wear a baseball cap underneath the protective helmet in order to prevent skin discomfort.

  1. If you are the catcher, be sure to use a helmet, mask with throat guard, chest protector and shin guards all throughout the game. And during warm ups with the pitcher, wear protective masks.

  1. Check the field where the game would be held carefully so that, you would be able to know if there may probably be hazardous objects within it.

  1. Players need to avoid standing close to the batter and must never ever hurl the bat away.

  1. Avoid wearing jewelry and if you happen to wear a medical bracelet or necklace, be sure to keep them underneath your clothes.

Take note of these tips and with common sense, you would be able to help you and your team have a fun and wonderful softball experience.
