Softball is not purely about winning as softball coaching is not only about doing what you can for your team to win. It is not about determining who is the best and who is the weakest. It is about making sure that each and every one in your team stay focused and dedicated so, that they perform at their best. At the same time, it is about imbibing many important values to your players that they can use inside as well as outside the field.
To be an effective softball coach, you need to be a role model to your team. You need to lead by example so, that your team would be able to get a firsthand look at how they should behave and how they should deal with other people so, that they would be able to pick it up much easier and quicker and apply it on themselves.
Here are some values that softball coaches should instill on their players.
n Dedication - First and foremost, as a coach, you need to imbibe dedication in your team as this would greatly help them stay focused and committed to softball. You need to emphasize for them to become great softball players, they must be ready to do everything that they can such as ensuring that they attend all important training sessions in order to achieve that ultimate goal.
n Teamwork - Softball is a team sport, which means that the outcome of the game depends on the performance of the whole team. Therefore, the softball coach must ensure that all of his players know and read each other well so that they can be in sync with one another, especially inside the field.
n Discipline - Without a strong discipline, a softball player cannot be all that he can be. In the absence of discipline, there would be inconsistency. One minute, a player would be playing fine. The next minute, his moves would be so disastrous that he would get benched off for the rest of game. So, it is very important for a softball coach to instill a strong discipline in his players as this would help them to see to it that their playing skills would get stronger and better continuously.
n Optimism - Of course, there would be good days and bad days for a softball team. There may be days where they may lose an important game or there may be days when their hearts and minds are not in their game. But if the softball coach and his team are able to stay positive and remember their past wins, it is highly likely that they would be able to continue to practice and improve their game so, that the next time they have a major competition, they would be able to win it.
n Patience - A softball player's skills do not develop overnight because it takes a lot of planning and practice. Hence, you need to understand that it takes time for you to be able to be good at softball but if you continue to hone your skills correctly and religiously, you would be able to reap the fruits of your labors sooner than you think.
