Einstein, Edison, Jefferson and many other great inventors helped mankind through innovation. What however made them so different than you and I? I often thought it was their ability to think differently. As I do more and more research and reading I have found that even this ability is not quite the correct answer. This month I have found myself in the preparation stages of my family's future. There were many unique situations that the two of us have to consider, but the answers became clear one Sunday after church. This particular Sunday we had an Easter activity that included an after mass ‘donuts and coffee.' After all the members of the church left, there was still a lot of food left over. We decided to start inviting people from outside to come and join in the festivities. We encountered a woman with red hair who continued to repeat the same two sentences over and over again, several curious locals and several unnotified staff members. After their arrival and eating, there was still food left over. I decided to take a box of doughnuts to this high school girl who requested RMB6 for a ride home everyday. She had no disability, but due to whatever circumstance felt the need to ask society for money. I walked around the corner and asked her if she wanted the food instead of money. She accepted the food with a confused look on her face. Before I gave her the doughnuts, some friends and I were talking in the young girls mother language about whether to give her food or not. Several individuals believed she was faking poverty. Others did not disagree but did not further encourage these friend's arguments. The girl saw that she was judged as pretending to be poor, but yet she still received food. This puzzled her. This was an equation that may have been challenging for Einstein, Edison and Jefferson. Why would you give her food? This is where the answer hit me. What made Einstein, Edison and Jefferson different was not their ability to think differently, but this very situation. Sometimes analysis of situations, people and plans are necessary, but other times we need to be like a great innovator. We need to be able to take the big and make it into smaller pieces. Only then can we begin to understand. This situation was quite complex, but breaking it down to smaller pieces, the answer was simple. Why did she receive food? Love, just that simple. "Why," is a wonderful question that can create wonderful elaborate answers. "Why," is also a question that can be answered with two words, "Why not?" Please feel free to use this article.
