Traditional hypnotherapy (using post-hypnotic suggestions) may be very effective. It is most helpful with individuals who are suggestible and easily led. This treatment frequently is ineffective with individuals who tend to be methodical or are critical thinkers.

A tool offered through that people are regularly taught for building self confidence is known as anchoring. Anchoring is a natural experience. For instance, if you hear an old song, and experience feelings of deja vu, this is because your unconscious related the sensations that you were having at one time, with the lyrics of the song you were listening to at the time. So now when you hear the music again, the unconscious triggers the emotions associated with it. So the song is an anchor for those feelings.
With anchoring, people are coached to recall a memory that made them feel the feelings of confidence. As they remember and relive those feelings, they are coached to touch two fingers together. The unconscious then associates the recollections of self-confidence with this behavior. If the patient says that they have no memory of ever feeling confident, the person may construct an imaginary event in which he or she does see himself exhibiting confidence, and then anchor that instance of confidence.
Once they've anchored the feelings of confidence, on those occasions that require self-confidence, touching the fingers together triggers emotions of confidence for use in the present situation.
Another very powerful NLP technique known as the "Flash" is sometimes used to instantaneously substitute painful feelings, which are typically associated with a lack of self-confidence. Through this method, the person uses the mental pictures that cause a negative feeling, to trigger mental pictures to generate a good emotion.
For example, the person directs the unconscious to use the mental pictures that are triggering emotions of insecurity, as triggers for mental pictures that precipitate feelings of self confidence. Our mental images trigger our emotions.
Everyone has dreams, and aspirations. Many individuals can work toward these to achieve their aspirations. Other people allow their lack of self-confidence to overwhelm them. Although NLP might not help every person, the overwhelming majority of people who attempt this strategy describe amazing success in building self confidence. This strategy is in fact, better than alternative techniques for the majority of people.
