Often we think of happiness as coming from falling in love with a wonderful person, having a successful career, or being able to live a luxurious life. We think, "I will be happy once I lose weight," or get your own house, or get a new job, or once you have more time, or are rich, or are no longer single. But our accomplishments and the circumstances of our lives do not determine our happiness nearly as much as our ability to appreciate the everyday moments we have. Try this exercise to find some of the ordinary moments of your life that you enjoy. Think of ten little activities or things that make you feel happy. As an example: 1. A good cup of coffee and the moment to enjoy it. 2. Working out every day and liking how you look and feel. 3. Liking work and the sense of purpose it gives. 4. Helping others to feel good. 5. Growing things or being around flowers and plants. 6. Knitting or some other hobby. 7. Cooking or baking something really exceptional. 8. Making a part of your home or yard look attractive. 9. Feeling close to your friends. 10. Time to read or watch a good television program at the end of the day. For you, your moments might include your pets, or music, or taking your favorite walk, or watching a movie with friends each week, but look for the kinds of things that are not so difficult or complicated to bring into your life more often. If you have difficulty thinking of these things right now, then think for a moment about some of your favorite things. Do you like sports? Collecting? Think of some of the things you used to do more often. Bringing your favorite things into your life each day and appreciating the moments will help you find happiness.
