When I think about making friends I'm reminded of the friendship quotes from the bible that says "If a man has friends, he must show himself friendly." I sometimes ask myself why I'm not more popular, although I do have a few friends I hang out with. I like to make friends with people at work, but sometimes wonder why it doesn't happen as much as I like.

I have learned a few important things:

You have to appear friendly before you can make friends. If you always go around frowning, or never smile, people are turned off. Most people naturally want to be around someone who is positive and smiling. Sometimes you have to fake it, but smiling is a way of attracting people

Learn to understand other people first before trying to get them to understand you. Learn to listen to other people, rather than expecting them to want to know all about you. These things come later.

Do not be afraid of rejection. I think this is what many people are afraid of, myself included, sometimes. What if that person isn't friendly or doesn't want to talk to me? I didn't have many friends in high school when I was young, but I spent time talking to adults I knew and etc. So, we can always find people to talk to. Don't be afraid to strike up a conversation with a stranger who seems friendly. Be careful of course, and trust your instincts. Sometimes people are friendly for the wrong reasons!

You're probably better off with a few close friends than many people who you just hang out with. But, of course, it depends on what you are looking for. Some of us are more comfortable with groups; some are more comfortable in one on one relationship.
