Although it is typical for everyone to experience fears, having a phobia is a more significant issue. A phobia is an illogical fear that is seemingly beyond one's control. Phobias are defined as a variety of anxiety disorder, and often trigger nervousness and anxiety attacks in a sufferer. When an individual has a serious phobia, they get so anxious to get away from their fear that it interferes with their daily lives and their ability to function in life.

Some of the most common phobias are claustrophobia, a fear of enclosed spaces, acrophobia, the fear of heights, and arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. The number one most common phobia is arachnophobia. Although lots of people have a fear of spiders, those with arachnophobia possess an abnormally high amount of fear. Even a photo or realistic drawing of an arachnid can make some arachnophobes uneasy. Some arachnophobes have anxiety attacks or panic at the sight of an arachnid. They might do anything in order to get away from a spider; for instance, people with severe arachnophobia might attempt to climb out of a moving vehicle if they see a spider near them.

Sufferers often feel ashamed of their unrestrained responses. Other people and even the sufferers themselves often find their behavior excessive. Their fear of spiders and their reaction to arachnids may cause other problems as well. Arachnophobia and other phobias often lead to another phobia known as agoraphobia.

Agoraphobia may arise when an individual is afraid of being in any potentially stressful setting or situation. For an individual with arachnophobia, this can mean avoiding any place a spider might be found, unfamiliar places, and even avoiding leaving the house or going outside altogether. This can seriously disturb a person's day-to-day life. A person may fear having anxiety attacks or embarrassing him or herself by losing control. Many people find themselves constantly stressed over their fears.

People with phobias often struggle to control their fears. This is due to the fact that the root of the fear lies at the unconscious level of the mind; so conscious effort or willpower can't work to control a fear. A phobia is most effectively dealt with at the unconscious level, which is why Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques are the most effective phobia treatments.

There are numerous different hypnotherapy programs available for treating phobias. Most utilize older hypnosis techniques that depend on post-hypnotic suggestions with very specific wording to combat phobias. These days, post-hypnotic suggestions often do not work because most people have a tendency to question everything. And since today's population is likely to do the opposite of what they are told, post-hypnotic suggestions do not work and they experience a polar response.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy differs from traditional hypnosis because it uses indirect suggestions that are hidden in conversation. That makes them hard for the mind to detect, so they are more likely to make it through to the unconscious level and be adopted.

The process typically starts by using relaxation hypnosis to make you feel very calm and relaxed. Then, instead of merely "telling" your unconscious what to do, Ericksonian techniques use metaphors and stories to steer your mind into a fear-free line of thinking.

NLP techniques work by pinpointing the specific thought process that generates an irrational phobia and using it to eliminate the fear. Because of this, NLP can be used on any phobia.

People respond better to the combination of NLP and Ericksonian techniques than to conventional hypnosis because instead of hearing direct commands, the unconscious mind is persuaded to follow a new, more logical line of reasoning. These programs are especially effective for people who are logical, critical thinkers and people who like to think on their own.

You don't need a different hypnosis program for each different phobia. One program that includes several sessions containing the perfect combination of Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP techniques can treat any phobia. Furthermore, a good program will be effective for any user. The variety of unique techniques in several different sessions guarantees success for everyone who uses them. By going through each step of the process, people often amaze themselves at how easily they beat their phobias.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP focus on transforming irrational behaviors and fears into rational, calm responses. For many people fighting crippling fears such as arachnophobia, this is a life-changing therapy. Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for beating anxieties and fears to live a happier, fuller life.
