High School Diploma More Valuable Than GED

Getting your high school diploma can be one of the toughest commitments you will ever make to yourself. There will be hundreds of times that you will consider simply quitting school and getting your GED instead. This, however, is a poor idea for a number of reasons.

High school graduates can expect to earn more money than GED candidates over the course of their lives. In fact, studies show that most high school graduates earn up to five dollars more for every hour they work than someone who earned a GED. Moreover, high school graduates get better quality jobs than people who have GEDs. Employers look at someone who graduated from high school as having accomplished something important. They know you went through four long years of courses to get that diploma. They know that your attendance met the requirements mandated by the state you live in. Someone with a GED, however, simply had to sit through a seven-hour test to get their certificate. It simply doesn't measure up in an employer's eyes. One final reason that a high school diploma is more valuable than a GED is that should you ever choose to enroll in post secondary education, you are far more likely to get into the institution of your choice with a diploma. Many community colleges accept GEDs, but most major universities only consider a high school diploma. People who have earned only a GED simply haven't done the academic coursework that your high school diploma represents. As a result, many people who have gotten a GED have to go through the academic proving ground of community college before a major university will even consider letting them set foot in their classes.

If you are trying to decide between a high school diploma and a GED, you should give more weight to the diploma. Employers certainly do.
