A career in event management can surely take you places if you are serious of making a career of organizing events and managing them on a large basis. Event management has come to be recognized as a management profession by many companies and educational institutions in the past decade so much so that leading universities have started offering degree programs in event management to individuals who are looking as event planning as a career option. Even if you think you want to start out by organizing smaller events, you must know how to select venue space, negotiate vendor contracts, organize registration, create itineraries, organize vendors, select menus, and so on. Not to mention you need to know how to charge for your services, write legal-binding contracts protecting yourself and your vendors, select insurance, and how to manage the final billing. Many people that hire wedding planners are looking for their dream of the perfect wedding to come to life. So it is very important to be able to multi-task and listen to the vision the client desires. When you journal you end up writing what you need to know. You will discover valuable insights about yourself that will allow you become more successful as an event planner. You will be able to lean on insights about yourself to guide you into more productive work within your niche. Remember you are unique and knowing more about yourself will undoubtedly show you that you are strongest in a niche within your event planning niche. Some people who choose a career in event planning have their own companies. They are hired by organizations and corporations to plan and coordinate big events. Some even hire out their services for events like weddings, school reunions, family reunions and birthday parties. Many large corporations employ event planners as part of the management staff. Some people who have trained for a career in event planning are employed by large hotels or big convention centers. Event planning is comparatively a new field of career. In fact people get training that really helps them to get in to this field. Event planners are trained to handle different types of situation, pressure so that they can work efficiently. This career requires two important aspects that are communication and organization. Event planners are called by different names like coordinator, meeting manager, special event coordinator, convention planner etc. There are also courses available to be taken by anyone who decide on taking a career in event planning. Eligibility courses usually requires to have a bachelor's degree in any discipline but most preferred are management-related fields, social sciences, liberal arts and humanities. Individuals who are of interest simply have to finish these courses that are offered in many academic institutional and universities. Short term certificates as well as post graduate MBA courses may also be taken. Major areas of principles and techniques must also be mastered to effectively perform and execute the duties of an event planner. These principles include public relations, organizational development, communication and implementation. The business of event/wedding planning is for those who like working with people, who enjoy planning large gatherings, and who are good at negotiating and networking. The event/wedding planner must be personable, a good listener, and a good delegate for their clients. They are the spokesperson in all facets of planning, including ordering flowers, hiring musicians, hiring photographers, finding a caterers, finding locations, choosing colors, etc., for their clients. Event and wedding planners look for the best services, best prices, and connections that will ensure successful events. Event planning encompasses conceptualization (motif and program flow), budgeting, logistics preparation and implementation. This career requires communication, organization and time management skills as this profession entails substantial coordination and management. Logistics, for one, includes selection and reservation of event sites, acquisition of permits, décor, manpower, entertainment, equipment, facilities, tables and chairs, security, guests, food, transportation, parking and cleanup.
