In an age where the advertising and marketing field is becoming more specialized by the day, job security may lie in possessing skills that transfer well from one area of expertise to another. Because new technologies oftentimes lead to additional advertising mediums, the once all-encompassing field of general marketing is now being diversified into segments such as wireless marketing, online marketing, customer relationship management, small business marketing and more.

Students may choose to concentrate on developing skills that may apply to practically every area in this industry. By doing so, they could position themselves as more valuable than another applicant who does not possess a variety of skills.

The Job Landscape

For those who hold advertising or marketing degrees, a variety of occupations are possible. From making sales presentations to developing marketing strategies, you might use your skills and talents to pursue a career at the in-house marketing department of an international company or for a small, local ad agency.

New Jersey college students can learn about a variety of career paths in the field of marketing. Let's look at three marketing-type jobs that are currently in demand.

Marketing Administrative Assistant - Graduates that hold a marketing degree may find themselves pursuing career opportunities that involve lending assistance to marketing managers, sales representatives or others. By coordinating schedules, compiling and distributing information, creating reports and more, you might find yourself filling a very important position within a marketing organization.

Marketing Sales - Sporting events, cell phones, television, radio, newspaper, the Internet -- everywhere you look you see advertising. Space or time for each of these marketing mediums is sold in order to generate revenue for the event, television station or website. If you possess a marketing degree, you could have the right skills to offer organizations that are searching for marketing sales representatives. In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor website (http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos297.htm) states, "Some employers prefer applicants with a college degree, particularly for sales positions that require meeting with clients. Courses in marketing ... communication, business, and advertising are helpful."

Customer Service - The marketing process doesn't end with advertising. Once customers are brought to a company, that business will want to keep those clients for as long as possible. Those who hold marketing degrees and were trained in the areas of customer loyalty and customer relations may be of particular interest to companies due to the fact that it costs far less to retain an existing customer than to find new ones.

What Qualifications Are Needed?

General qualifications may include knowledge of advertising principles, marketing communications, sales presentations and others. These will depend on the type of organization you work for and where that organization is located. A small ad agency in North Dakota may have an entirely different set of requirements than a company in New Jersey. College degrees can often help set you ahead of the pack especially with the competition being so fierce.

With such a diverse array of jobs, there is little wonder that marketing is such a popular career path. Take time to research the various occupations that fall under the general marketing umbrella and you may discover an exciting opportunity you didn't expect.
