Rhino Tuff HD4170 Rhino Roll Electric Color Coil Inserter Review |

Overview: - The HD4170 Rhino Roll
is a production quality electric spiral coil inserter that is made as
part of the Rhin-O-Tuff line of binding equipment.
- This
machine is designed as companion for your heavy duty Rhino modular
binding punch. In fact, it can even be bolted to the top of most HD and
OD series punches for convenience and to save space.
- The HD-4170 has dual powered adjustable rollers to help spin your coils onto your documents.
Strengths / Features: - The
rollers used on the HD 4170 are excellent. It uses one high quality
rubber roller to grip the coil and another smooth black roller to help
make sure that the coil doesn't get off track. Both of these rollers
spin to help keep the spiral moving across the edge of your book. This
is similar to the design used on the GBC CC2700 which is a much more
expensive machine.
- The smaller bottom roller on the HD4170 is
fully adjustable. If you are using this machine with smaller diameter
books you can set the rollers so that they are closer together.
Likewise, when using large diameter coils, it is possible to increase
the distance between the rollers. This feature allows Rhin-O-Tuff to
claim that the HD4170 is compatible with all of the sizes and pitches
of spiral coil that are available on the market.
- The Rhino
Tuff 4170 includes a pair of spiral coil crimpers in the box with the
machine. This isn't a huge deal since the crimpers are only worth about
$30. However, the machine has a holder on the side of it to keep your
crimpers within reach. This helps to keep your crimping pliers from
getting lost and ensures that they are readily available when you need
them. This is very important since it is nearly impossible to bind
documents with spiral coils if you don't have a pair of crimping pliers.
- The
Rhino Roll HD4170 can either be used as a standalone spiral coil
inserter or it can be bolted to the top of your HD or OD series
Rhino-Tuff binding punch. Attaching this machine to your Rhinotuff
punch can help you to conserve space and maximize productivity.
However, the fact that you don't have to attach this machine is nice
for organizations that prefer to bind documents in an assembly line
fashion.
Weaknesses / Limitations: - Although
Rhin-O-Tuff claims that this machine can be used with all pitches and
diameters of coil, this is only sort of true. Although it is
theoretically possible to use this machine with extremely large sizes
of coil (35mm - 50mm) it is not really practical. It is extremely
difficult to use this type of coil inserter with these large sizes of
coil. The coil gets caught on the edge of the pages and becomes
deformed causing a big mess. This can be improved by using an oval hole
punch and by properly forming the spines of your book. However, it is
still difficult.
- Attaching this machine to your Rhin-O-Tuff
punch is no small task. You need a special kit in order to bolt the two
machines together. This kit is sold separately from the machine.
However, even with the kit you can expect to spend between 30-45
minutes figuring out how to attach the two machines (that is how long
it took me). Considering this fact, it probably isn't advisable to bolt
your machines together if you ever plan on using the two machines
separately. It is also important to note that this machine will not
bolt to horizontal punches or to the HD7500.
Recommendation: - If
you have a Rhin-O-Tuff binding punch and are looking for a high quality
coil inserter to use with your machine the Rhino Roll HD4170 is the
logical choice.
- This high quality machine is both versatile
and durable. It is designed for production environments where
productivity is essential.
- The dual roller design and the
fact that you can fully adjust the rollers make it compatible with a
huge variety of coil sizes and pitches. However, it is still difficult
to use extremely large coils with this system.
- Even so, this
is one of the highest quality coil inserters that I have seen and it is
an excellent choice for high volume users who need a standalone machine
or who want to bolt an inserter to the top of their modular binding
punch.
