Overview: - The Rhino Tuff
OD-4800 is definitely something to be excited about. It is the only
interchangeable die modular binding punch that is available on the
market.
- This machine allows you to switch between multiple
different punching patterns just like the larger Rhino electric modular
punches. However, it comes at a fraction of the cost because it is a
manual punch.
- The OD4800 was designed for small organizations
that want to punch multiple hole patterns but either don't have the
budget or don't produce the volume of binding needed to justify
purchasing a large modular electric binding punch.
- However,
the Rhino Tuff OD-4800 is built with the same heavy duty metal
construction as their other ultra heavy duty interchangeable die
modular binding punches.
Strengths / Features: - The
biggest strength of the OD-4800 is its cost. This is the cheapest
solution on the market for an organization that need to bind documents
with multiple hole-patterns. With a retail cost of around eight hundred
and fifty dollars including one die, this machine is about half the
cost of the cheapest electric punch on the market.
- The
OD-4800 uses the same dies as the OD4000 electric binding punch. This
means that there are twelve standard hole patterns that can be used
with this machine. You can choose from hole patterns for spiral coil
binding, plastic combs, double loop wire, Velobind and 3-hole punching.
Plus, a number of custom dies are also available for this machine if
you need to produce another hole pattern.
- Like the other
Rhino Tuff modular punches, you can bolt your finishing equipment to
the side or top of this machine. It is designed to allow you to attach
a coil inserter, wire closer or plastic comb opener to the top or side
of the machine (depending on the device you are attaching). This can
help you to save space while allowing you to create your own custom
binding system.
- The OD4800 is built with the same high
quality components as the other machines in the Rhin-O-Tuff line of
binding punches. It has a high quality metal case and heavy duty metal
components that help to ensure that this machine will remain strong and
functional for many years to come.
Weaknesses / Limitations: - Although
the idea of an interchangeable die manual punch is a great idea it
would have been nice to see a better punching capacity. The OD-4800 is
rated to punch up to twelve sheets of paper at a time. This capacity is
smaller than the capacity offered by most standalone manual binding
machines. This smaller punching capacity will reduce the productivity
of this machine especially for organizations that need to bind larger
sized documents.
- This machine comes with one die set but does
not come with any finishing equipment. If you need to punch two hole
patterns you will need to purchase another die set and a two pieces of
finishing equipment. Even if you are a good shopper you will most
likely spend as much on the accessories for this machine as you will on
the machine itself. This is something to keep in mind when you are
budgeting for a system such as this.
- Although it seems like a
great idea to attach a piece of finishing equipment to the top of the
punch, it requires a special kit that must be purchased separately.
Plus, the process of attaching the finishing device to the top of your
machine can be a little tricky and takes a while.
- The die
change mechanism on the OD4800 uses two bolts to hold the die in place.
You have to loosen these two bolts and then slide the die out of the
side of the punch. The process should only take about two minutes.
However, it is important that you get the two bolts tight. If they are
not tight the die may move slightly during the punching process causing
undue wear on your machine and reducing the accuracy of your punch.
Recommendation: - The
Rhino Tuff OD-4800 is the only interchangeable die modular binding
punch that is available on the market and it is a good choice for small
organizations that need to produce multiple different hole patterns.
- When
this machine was released it was the only punch available on the market
that could produce two hole patterns for binding. However, in the past
year Akiles released their DuoMac series of binding punches. These
allow you to pick two hole patterns of your choice and come with a wire
closer and a comb opener (if necessary). These machines also offer a
much better punching capacity than the OD4800. Organizations that just
need to produce two hole patterns might want to consider the Akiles
Duomac series of punches.
- However, organizations such as
small print shops or copy shops who want to produce more than two hole
patterns may still want to consider the OD-4800. Just be sure to budget
for the modular finishing equipment and extra die sets when you are
considering your purchase.
