Overview: - The Rhin-O-Tuff
HD4470 is a modular plastic comb opener that is designed for binderies,
copy shops, printers, in plant print shops and organizations that need
to bind large numbers of documents with plastic combs.
- This machine is made by Performance Design Incorporated as part of the Rhino line of modular binding equipment.
- It
is designed as a companion to your Rhino Tuff modular binding punch or
other heavy duty electric plastic comb binding machine.
Strengths / Features: - The
HD4470 is shipped with convenient feet so that it can be used as a
standalone comb opener. However, it is also designed to be bolted to
your Rhino Tuff modular binding punch using an optional kit. Many users
choose to bolt the HD4470 to their Rhino punching equipment so that it
is available whenever you need it.
- Although the HD4470 used
to be an eleven inch plastic comb opener, PDI has upgraded it so that
it is now a fourteen inch opener. This means that that this machine can
be used to bind documents with 15 ring half letter sized combs, 19 ring
letter size combs, 21 ring A4 combs and 24 ring legal combs.
- This
machine is designed to open all of the different sizes of plastic combs
that are available on the market. It is compatible with both round
combs and oval shaped combs. This means that it can handle 3/16" spines
for binding a few pages, 2" combs for binding documents up to 425
sheets of paper. Or you can use it to bind any size of document in
between these extremes.
- Like all high quality modular comb
openers, the HD4470 has an adjustable paper stop to control the exact
amount that the machine will open combs. Performance Design calls this
feature an adjustable ring opener control. This feature is extremely
useful for increasing productivity when binding a large number of
documents with the same size of plastic combs.
Weaknesses / Limitations: - The
HD4470 is excellent for binding documents that are up to fourteen
inches wide. However, the handle on this machine will get in the way if
you try to bind documents that are longer than 24 rings. If you need to
bind seventeen inch documents, you will need to insert the last few
rings by hand or try to figure out a way to work around the handle on
this machine.
- Although the HD-4470 offers excellent
productivity, for extremely high volume applications an electric
plastic comb opener such as the PB2600 is a better choice. The PB2600
is faster, easier to use and doesn't have a handle to get in the way
when binding longer documents.
Recommendation: - The
HD-4470 is an excellent modular comb opening machine that is great for
high volume users and owners of a Rhino Tuff modular punch.
- It
can be used as a stand alone device or can be conveniently bolted to
the top of your Rhino punch. It is excellent for opening letter, legal,
A4 and landscape documents. However, it is not ideal for documents that
are longer than fourteen inches.
