Finding the Right Home Decorating Balance

Each person has their own idea of how their home should look, but sometimes it is difficult to achieve a balance between what you want and what looks harmonious and balanced. This can be due to different factors such as the height of the ceilings and those odd pieces of furniture that you love even though they don't match. It can also be more difficult if the two people who live together are of a different height. The shorter person does not want to feel overwhelmed by large items of furniture, while the tall person may feel as if he is living in a dolls house.

So balance is necessary to create a harmonious environment where everyone can feel comfortable. When paying attention to scale, larger rooms should be furnished with larger items such as tall bookshelves and high-backed sofas. Smaller rooms need smaller items and less of them. Too much pattern on curtains and cushions can make a room feel too busy and not restful - important in a bedroom.

Contrast in colour gives interest, but too much contrast can make a room feel muddled and irritating to be in. Too much contrast can be overwhelming, but a small amount can create interest and energy. Balance in contrast can be achieved by using tiny accents throughout the room or one single focal point such as a picture on a wall, perhaps highlighted by the correct lighting. While professional decorators will put you on the right track, you may be able to achieve it yourself by thinking of what works for you.
