The History of the gay community The oldest documentation of same sex relationships date back to Ancient Greece, although they had not in fact replaced marriage all together. Generally speaking, the mature males would not have a mature partner, (excluding Alexander the Great), but would be the erastes (lover) to a younger eromenos (loved one). The elder of the two would often act as mentor and educator for the younger male, although the sexuality would not manifest in penetrative acts. However, the relationships rarely met this idea, with the younger male being used for gratification before they were discarded. Boys were also accused of making numerous financial demands. Additionally, same sex scholarly ‘empires of the mind' were not uncommon throughout Medieval Arabic and Hebrew cultures. In relation, John Boswell, author of Christianity, Social Tolerance and Homosexuality, denoted that there were same sex Christian monastic sects, along with other religious divisions in which homosexuality was rife. In conjunction, Homosexuality has been accepted or in the very least acknowledged in China, for centuries. The famous Scholar, Pan Guangdan had denoted that every emperor under the Han Dynasty had been involved in a sexual relationship with another male at one point. In addition, description of lesbian relationships in Chinese historical literature has also been noted. To sum up, irrespective of the times and regardless of any hostile feeling or ‘hush hush' attitudes, homosexuality was certainly no myth.
