Safe as Houses: Home Protection for Peace of Mind

Countless people across the country work and save their way towards acquiring their dream home. This doesn't literally mean building the actual house itself, however, as the word ‘home' tends to mean a personal living space that offers security and happiness. This is quite distinct from the bricks and mortar that is used in its construction.

Indeed, homes can hold many happy memories for people and often leads them to become rather attached to it, which is why it's best to ensure there is protection in place should the unthinkable happen.

Despite this, it's estimated that as many as a quarter of all UK homes are uninsured, meaning that a large percentage of the population's homes are at risk from any number of life's little - or large - mishaps.

It may seem like a good way of saving money, given that there's not always a legal requirement to have home insurance in place, but it doesn't really make sense when you consider how much is at stake. The average house price in the UK stands at around a quarter of a million pounds. With the value of all the contents such as electrical appliances, clothes, furniture and decorations, the cautiousness of having at least some insurance in place is clear.

The biggest item of value, obviously, is the house itself. So having basic buildings insurance is important, which will cover damage to the house caused by things such as fire, flood, vandalism and subsidence. However, this normally won't cover damage to home office equipment, home entertainment devices, kitchen appliances... generally any object that exists under the roof.

By having enough contents and buildings insurance in place, this can cover all of the above, as well as any damage that is caused to garden furniture, sheds and garages. Furthermore, if a burglary results in the theft of cash or credit cards, many contents insurance polices will provide at least some cover for these too.

So there are many factors to consider when deciding which home insurance cover to go for. Ultimately, it will depend very much on the situation. Those who have a lot of valuable possessions, for example, may prefer to make sure they're fully covered when it comes to protecting the contents of their home.

Given the amount of time, effort and money many people invest in their homes, home insurance can really save the day if the worst was to happen, and soften what could otherwise be a mighty financial blow.
