Insurance is important in all elements of life; offering protection for your home, your treasured possessions, your car and also to provide a safety net for your dependents in the form of life insurance. So, it is important that when purchasing any type of cover you ensure your policy is underwritten by a reputable, quality insurer.

It's a massive market and not all insurance companies are the same, but taking out a policy with a quality insurer is important to ensure that you get what you pay for and are treated as a valuable customer, not just a short-term source of income. Insurers take your money to protect you against different types of risk, but when push comes to shove you need to know that they will be there for you; to assist you in your hour of need and to show compassion and understanding.

Many insurance claims are made following a distressing incident involving the policyholder, such as being in a car accident, being burgled, being robbed or a family tragedy, so it is important to know that the people you speak to on the insurance helpline will not only be sympathetic but also helpful.

Being able to get hold of your insurer when you need them is also an important factor to consider when comparing insurance quotes. It is no good getting a fabulous price for your premium, if it proves extremely difficult to get in touch with your insurer for advice or to make a claim when you need to.

Also related to making claims is the protection of a no-claims bonus. Especially in the case of motor insurance many companies offer to protect your no-claims bonus, meaning that should you submit a claim your discounted premium is maintained. However, if you then decide to move insurer you must state whether you have made a claim within the last five years. Some insurers will not recognise the protection afforded by your previous insurer if you have made a claim and could quote a higher insurance premium. So, check this when looking for quotes and before signing on the dotted line.

Insurers will offer varying levels of compulsory and voluntary excesses, when considering whether to offer you cover. So, it is not just the bottom line, i.e. the premium price, that is important when considering which insurance policy to buy, remember to consider the whole package.

Finally, some insurers do not appear on comparison websites so you will need to individually compare these to other offers to see if you can get a better deal. Again, check whether ‘better deal' means they just offer cheaper premiums or whether they offer the full range of benefits that comes with quality insurance. In other words all the things discussed above such as lower compulsory excesses, acknowledgement of protected no-claims bonuses, 24/7 customer service and an international claim line.
