Being a Broke College Student is a Thing of the Past

I know; I've been there-- eating nothing but top ramen and macaroni and cheese for weeks on end. It is cliché, but I've actually done that. Even now, being a college graduate, I find myself filling my grocery cart with fake cheesy goodness. But back to the main point: college students are usually poor. It is just the way it works. But there are ways to make a little more money while in college—all while having enough time to "study", socialize, and sleep.

  • Donate plasma. Uggh! Everyone parent's worst nightmare—kids slowly selling their bodies, piece by piece. I actually had friends in college who called it their second job. They'd go as many times a week that they would be allowed. Many paired this with real part-time jobs so that they could buy non-essential things: clothes and shoes (OK. Those are considered essentials for me). But you get the idea. So, if you don't have a problem with needles and your body fluid being sucked right out, donating plasma might be a smart move.

  • Sell things online. This is perfect for those with hectic school schedules. There is a myriad of sites that you can use as a "store front". To make it even easier, find a drop ship company. Believe me; it will be so much easier for you because you won't have to house or store any of your own products that you are selling. And if you sell the right types of items, you can make a hefty bundle.

  • Babysit. I know; it brings you back to the good ol' days of junior high. But there are many young married college students who have children and would LOVE a break for a night. This is your time to swoop on in. Just think, you'll be paid to play with little kids. Some wouldn't even consider that work. And if that is you, try babysitting.

  • Become a tutor. This could be very beneficial to your brain and your wallet. Tons of college kids are looking for great tutors so that their parents will continue to shell out cash. And then there are some who actually want to do well in school; they want to learn. But either way, if you are a great tutor, who really knows your stuff, you just might have struck gold.

  • Odd jobs. There is always a need for this. This could include cleaning a house, lawn care, repairs, and whatever else you can think of. If you are really desperate, talk to some apartment complexes and dorms to see if they could use your services. They just might take you up on the offer.

  • Or you could always try your luck at the lottery. Good luck with that one.

Try to be creative when looking for new ways to make money, if the above list won't work for you. In college, I even began rolling my own change. No, seriously! Whenever I would find any change on the ground I pocketed it and added it to my collection. When you are as poor as I was in college, every little bit helps. And now to leave you with the phrase that has been made fun of in many movies—"Stay in School!"
