For nearly all people in life the major financial purchases like buying a house or a car require credit. Certainly, in order to be approved for credit you must have a respectable credit score. Life and finances both tend to be less expensive and much easier when you have a good credit score. But what can you do if your credit score is already shot?

There are several steps that you can take to improve and repair your credit. The first thing that you need to do is to get your free credit report from all of the big three credit bureaus, which are TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. There is definitely different information contained on each report and you may need to take steps to fix bad information on all three of the reports. None of the bureaus employ the same calculations or information so it is possible that one report may be good and the other two bad or some variation of that.

Be aware that a creditor may use the reports from just one of the bureaus or from all three. Therefore it is important that all of the reports look as good as possible. If there is information that you cannot change just leave that be and concentrate on the things that you can dispute and adjust.

All of the erroneous and inaccurate information on the report should be removed. You will need to issue a dispute as soon as possible. The faster you make the dispute the sooner it can be deleted as the bureaus have 30 to 45 days after receipt of the dispute to prove the information is correct. If they cannot prove that the information is valid it must then be removed from the report.

An alternative option is to contact the original creditor and see if they will remove the information. Simply make sure to follow up with them because it could easily fall through the cracks since it would not be a priority for them.

It can be a tedious and slow process to repair your credit. It may take more time than you realize to get the results you want but once the process is finished you can relax more in your financial life.

In conjunction with repairing your past credit it is absolutely crucial to make sure that you are not accruing any more bad credit. That means living completely within your means and avoid using more credit. Make sure that your payments are made on time, every time and try not to use any more credit than is really necessary.

You will also need to pay down your debts as much as you can. A huge deciding factor in credit scores is the actual debt to available credit ratio. Do not use more than 15 to 35% or the money you have available for credit to make certain the highest possible credit scores.
